It’s taken 20 years – but the wait has been worth it!
The 2008 Golden Tee World Championship will be THE tournament that sets the bar for the future of Golden Tee. Along with the largest purse and field ever assembled, the 2008 Worlds will bring together the best of the past, as it looks towards a bigger and brighter future.
"The 2008 Golden Tee World Championship combines the best of previous Worlds and Regionals tournaments," commented Gary Colabuono, marketing director at Incredible Technologies. “With the World Championship Cup at stake, $100,000 on the line, 400 players in one room and the Las Vegas Hilton as tournament central, nothing like this has ever happened before in video sports.”
According to Colabuono, this “best of both worlds” theme should resonate with players, operators and locations.
“We really only scratched the surface of what a major Golden Tee tournament could be with the Regionals,” he said. "We believe this new tournament format will appeal to more players than ever. We now have a solid, winning formula of success."
Colabuono underscored the Joes vs. Pros format and the importance of the team competition.
“We loved the fact that the Regionals allowed the average player to rub shoulders with the game’s professionals. We also wanted to make the Worlds a larger and more important event. So what we're doing in Vegas is combining the honor of representing your country on a global stage - and the drama and passion of the team competition - with the camaraderie, spirit and large-scale excitement the Regionals brought to the table. Throw in the big paycheck that the World Champion title deserves, and you have all the elements necessary for a spectacular event. I can’t wait for September!"
Ground zero for the tournament will be the Las Vegas Hilton, with the competition running September 12-13. Based on the success of the Regionals, where over 500 players came together over three events, Colabuono and the rest of the IT team have created a tournament structure they feel will draw the best players from across the U.S. and Canada – as well as the rest of the world.
| How things have changed. The first Worlds in 2002 (above) featured just six machines. Below is just a small section of the over 50 machines that will be needed in 2008. |
"We expect the field to fill quickly since we’re limiting participation to first 400 qualifiers to register," stated Colabuono. "And we're paying deeper than we ever have before. If you finish in 400th place, you'll get $25. In 9th,
$500. And if you make the top eight you'll have a chance at $20,000. So just like the Regionals, everybody in the field will cash a check, play free Golden Tee and enjoy the festivities of the biggest weekend in the history of the game."
Also like the Regionals, players need to play only 50 games during the July 1- August 15 qualifying period - score doesn't matter, but there will be "incentives" for players to shoot their best. And along with a chance at a piece of the astonishing $100,000 purse, players in attendance will participate in the first-ever Golden Tee World Rankings.
"It's a neat little twist we've put together that we believe the players will love," said Colabuono. "Since all 400 players will play the same courses and conditions, we're going to send every competitor a brand-new Worlds Gold Card with their world ranking printed right on the front. Think about it - the next time they're at a bar with their buddies they can flash their card and say 'Hey, I'm the 185th best player in the world. Come and get me!'"
But what about the last two spots on Team USA? Through promotions sponsored by Club Lucky and Promo Nation, U.S. players will have additional opportunities to become part of the most illustrious team in Golden Tee.
"The amusement operators from Club Lucky and Promo Nation truly believe in our products and the power of promotions," said Colabuono. "They've made a commitment above and beyond what we hope all operators would do. So offering each group a Team USA spot rewards their hard work and dedication and is a great way for us to say 'thank you.' Players across the country will love this unexpected second chance to make the team.”
This September, one tournament will captivate the video game world. One team will earn the right to the storied Championship Cup. One champion will be crowned. And 400 players will make history. The Golden Tee World Championship is coming - start preparing now!
"As the 20th anniversary of Golden Tee approaches with the 2009 edition, the 2008 Worlds kicks off a new direction where bigger purses and bigger fields are the standard," commented Colabuono. "There's going to be drama and action on a scale that only a tournament this size could generate. Saying things are 'bigger and better' is a cliché. But this is the one time bigger IS better!"
