Some people play cards. Others join a softball league. Ryan Mathews races trucks at over 200 mph… and plays Golden Tee.
Mathews' competitive streak is a little out of the ordinary, but make no mistake, he loves to compete. And while nothing pumps adrenaline through his veins more than pure speed, even Mathews, a NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series driver, can't deny the rush he gets from competing at Golden Tee.
So when he got a chance to visit Golden Tee Central, aka Incredible Technologies, and play Steven Sobe, lets just say it got his adrenaline going.
"It was a big deal for me to come and visit IT," commented the 27-year old Lake Geneva, WI native. "The facility was way bigger than I expected. And getting to play against Sobe was a pretty cool experience."
For a few hours in late December, Mathews got the full tour of IT - seeing everything from how the game is designed, to all the employees that work behind the scenes to make Golden Tee the greatest coin-op game in history. He even managed to sign a few autographs and chat racing with IT's resident racing fanatic Duffer Dan.
But being the competitor that he is, Mathews came with an agenda.
"I wanted to come and try to play my best against Sobe," exclaimed Mathews. The three-time national champion was more than happy to oblige.
So along with two of his friends, Mathews and Sobe headed down the road to Duffy's Sports Pub for an experience the driver said he would never forget.
Even with Sobe coaching him, Mathews never did come close to beating the champ, but he did find a new way to indulge his competitive edge - Prize Play. He can't get enough of it.
"Competition is the heart and soul of why I love Golden Tee," said Mathews. "It's just like racing. There's so much strategy and thinking involved. And playing online just adds to that competition. Every time I play I have to play online."
And how has he done?
"I've won a few virtual balls," joked Mathews.
So he's got a little ways to go. But don't worry, Mathews isn't just a fast driver - he's a fast learner. And as long as his competitive fire burns for Golden Tee, he'll be playing fast and furious.
