Sobe Tips: Club Selection on Bonnie Moor

You've seen how to Play, Now here's what to Play and Why

sobeWith new courses, come new challenges, along with new golf equipment to go at these challenges with. And while 3-time Golden Tee National Champion Steve Sobe has showed you how to play every hole, he hasn't yet revealed what to play.

While much of this is personal preference, there is still plenty of strategy involved when deciding which clubs are best suited for each course. With the course reviews now complete, Sobe wants to help you determine which 2009 club set is best suited for your game, course by course.

First on the docket is the first Scottish-style Links course in Golden Tee LIVE history; Bonnie Moor.

Big Berthas

berthas*"The 310-driver can make a difference when you need exceptional distance to counteract lengthy setups. Holes 2, 6, 8, and 16 are ones that come to mind where having extra distance can be the difference between success and failure."

*"The 7 and 9-woods are great to have on any course because of their ability to fly high and land soft."

*"The BB wedges setup well for BM. The rare “A” wedge comes in handy but the star of the set is none other than the L-wedge. It’s a definite “must have” when you consider that BM has hundreds of deep pot bunkers."

X-20's

x20s*"The 300-yard driver may not offer exceptional distance but it makes up for it with its shot making ability. The height of this Driver can be a hefty advantage for approaching greens. Numbers 4, 14, and 18 are all holes that come to mind."

*"The X-20's come with the 7-wood, so you'll still have a very valuable club to use on confined par-3's as well as many approach shots on par-4's."

*"The set also offers up the L-wedge, which as mentioned earlier, is crucial when playing a course like Bonnie."

FT-ibrids (Hybrids)

birds*"These clubs are similar to the now infamous "old birds" from the original Golden Tee LIVE. The only difference, which is somewhat of a large one depending on player preference, is the lack of L-wedge."

*"The hybrid irons provide an extra 10 yards in distance each, which can be very important on just about every hole. You also won't see huge gaps between clubs that you would with the other club sets."

*"The set also comes equipped with a 300-yard driver along with 3 and 5-woods, so you can loft the ball in on drivable par-4's and par-5's."

Sobe Says…

sobe head"From tee to green, I really like the FT-ibrids best, but in the end I have to go with the X-20’s because it has an L-wedge. I can't stress enough how important this club is on this particular course."

"I also believe that the 300-yard driver does more than the 310-yard lower lofted Big Bertha Driver on Bonnie. While you won't be able to reach greens from certain tee areas without the extra distance, you can really control and spin the ball better on crucial tee shots."

"Let's face it, it depends on what you feel comfortable doing and how you want to attack a course. In this instance however, I feel the X-20's are the best set with the deciding factor being the pot bunkers."
