QUICK STATS:
The PCC action is here, and the PCC West, aka the Denver Open, is in the books!
Twenty-eight players teed it up at the 2nd Denver Open this past weekend, and Table Steaks East was once again the spot for one of the most exciting events of the year. Included in this loaded field were past tournament winners, Golden Tee world champions, and players from all over the map looking to prevail in the Colorado clash!
Washington trackballer Evan Gossett came into the event as one of the top players without a tournament title to his name. That was, however, until he rolled through the Denver field and finally got the monkey off his back.
The tournament action started on Saturday with a 5-course qualifier. A familiar name rose to the top early as Ohio native and GT world champion Andy Haas grabbed top qualifier honors with a –126 total.
With a more compact field, great matches took place in all parts of the championship bracket. While Haas along with the other players in this talented group did their best maneuvering acts, it was Gossett that was up for the challenge. Evan tore through the bracket to earn king-of-the-hill and went into the finals undefeated.
It was Texas sharpshooter Mark Stenmark making his way through the other side of the bracket to join Evan in the finals. Mark had to go through both Haas and Minnesota's Marc Muklewicz to make it there – far from an easy road to say the least.
Evan, however, was too good to be beat. He took down Stenmark in their first match and made it through the 2010 Denver Open unscathed en route to his first-ever GT title. For Stenmark, this marks his 2nd silver medal of the year; the other came back in February at the Florida Open. Rounding out the top four was Muklewicz (3rd) and Haas (4th).
Gossett has been getting closer to finally securing a tournament win, and perhaps it was only a matter of time. He's always sported the game, but his tournament play has certainly come along in late 2009 and now 2010. The timing couldn't be better, as the Players Charity Championship is now only a few weeks away! Congrats to Evan on the win!
Only a quick breather before the game's best are set to matchup once again! Stay tuned to Goldentee.com for plenty more on the PCC which heads to Splinters in Palatine, IL on August 27 through the 29th!
